Halloween

We LOVE Halloween here at the Summers' home. It is celebrated throughout the entire month of October with crafting, cooking, and of course costuming. We recieved our annual pj package from Grandma Julianne! Thank you, Thank you - they looked so warm and cozy in the jammies. This year we each had our own choice: Sam was Spiderman, Jack was a Turtle, and Lyv was a Ladybug. Shawn and I threw around several ideas, but none were the "perfect" idea until we laid eyes on an old blanket I had. A few cuts here, a hat there, a couple of tanning sessions later whallaaa!!!!
Mexican Hat Dancers. Shawn's costume was so complete that while we were at the ward Trunk or Treat people didn't recognize him, and he kept speaking Spanish, which didn't help. I was asked several times who I was with (my "spice" boyfriend)! The kicker though was that he was confused to be a black man - the white hands gave it away. He was pretty darn dark, Jack was a little bit afraid of him when he first saw him. We spent Friday at the Trunk or Treat, Jack LOVED Halloween because it meant candy, candy, and more candy - he also liked the apple bobbing game, and kept trying to eat the hanging apple even after the game was done. Sam is a little more picky with his candy, he only takes chocolate or pretzel/cracker type candy, anything fruity is a no go, and so he spent much of the night saying, "No Thanks!"
Saturday was Sam's last soccer game of the season. He did awesome. There was seriously a huge improvement from his first game to his last, and he was an animal this last game. He sometimes gets a little too competitive and lets the other team have it if they score a goal! We are working on this. Look at the game face on that boy! Yikes, I'm a little afraid. But the highlight was his very own trophy, with his name on it. He couldn't have felt like more of a winner. In fact, I told him that I wanted to make a sign with his name and number on it to take to the game so we could cheer him on. He told me no! He said, "I already know I'm cool, so I don't need a sign."
We celebrated Halloween on Friday night, and Saturday and had our traditional spider breakfast, and mummy dog dinner. It was spooktacular!

Summers' Schenanigans

Sam scored another goal at his soccer game yesterday, and was soooo excited since we were all there to cheer him on. Kids sports at this age is hilarious, they would much rather run around and play with each other than focus on the game. We have a hard time watching Sam be a goof ball, and try to "encourage" him to pay attention, okay so we sometimes yell - "Sam watch the ball!" Regardless, he has a super fun time frolicking on the field, and ever once in a while actually playing soccer.
Sam has been saying some really funny things lately - here's a little sample:
Outside, Shawn could smell something grilling, and Sam said, "Oh your dreams have come true Dad, you get to have a hamburger!"
Listening to the Primary song, "The Scriptures Can Lead Me to Jesus" Sam said, "Why are the scriptures mean to Jesus?" I was very confused and tried to caught up with his train of thought, thinking that maybe he was referring to the crucifixion and suggested this. He said, "No mom, we sing the scriptures can be mean to Jesus!" Again I thought what?, and then it came: The lyrics could sound like The scriptures can be mean to Jesus instead of Lead me to Jesus. Oops.

We carved our pumpkins on Monday and Sam loved doing it this year, guts and all. Jack would have nothing to do with pulling out the insides, which I thought was wierd, since he's into everything else. He would just say - yuck! He did try to juggle the carving knives, which we had to have on constant survelliance but we did it. Our Dracula, Pirate Skull and Crossbones, Cat, and of course Our little Princess.
Jack has started to spout out words, and I'm soooo happy! What a difference it makes when he can actually tell me what he needs and wants. New words include: "I don't know" "Milk" "Church" "Sis" "Shoes" "Keys" and my personal favorite - "Sure"! He never says yes to questions, so if I ask Jack, do you want to take a bath, "Sure" is the response. He is so cute! He also loves Sam's soccer and is quite the little dribbler. Unfortunately he tends to show his skills on the field during the games, not so cute then.

Lyv is 6 months, has 2 teeth on the bottom, babbles constantly, and is was introduced to the baby swing on the swing set. This has caused a sort of musical chairs - Lyv is in the baby swing, Jack the big boy swing, and Sam hanging from any other random part of the swing set.

The fall colors are AMAZING! I've been meaning to get out and take some pictures so we can have this on record, but I always forget to pull it out in time. Here's one pic of a tree at the soccer field, but its like this everywhere, and just beautiful.

Also the leaves from the trees in our yard are HUGE! They are as long as my foot and could substitute as a hat.
Finally we got a surprise Halloween package from our dear friends - the kids loved the light up pitch forks, wall hangings, and I loved the cute witches hat for Lyv!
How funny - she is so bewitching! Thanks Janke's we miss you!

Summers' Schenanigans - Life is a Zoo

Sam scored his 1st goal in his soccer game on Saturday! He is really liking soccer and it is a much needed "outlet" for his energy. We headed to the Bronx Zoo after his soccer game and enjoyed the Boo at the Zoo. Sam was able to get in free because he wore his Halloween costume, and they had a lot of neat Halloween activities going on. The kids loved the gorillas, elephants, tigers, and crocodiles. Lyv didn't love the zoo, maybe its the teething (she broke another tooth, that is two on the bottom) or the fact that she was buried in popcorn, but she would have prefered a less restrained activity. Teething has not been a fun thing with her - she seems to be extra uncomfortable, and it is so hard to see her not be content, because she is so happy normally.

The fall colors are in peak foliage, and I'll try to post some pictures next time - they are AMAZING. Really it is almost hazardous for SHawn and I, since we look at the trees instead of the road while we drive. On our way to and from the zoo we took the Tappen Zee Bridge (isn't that the funniest name?) over the hudson. It was HUGE! I have a whole new appreciation for bridges and rivers.

Jack is quite the character and this morning he put the Mickey ears on Lyv and ran over to me, covering his mouth fake laughing, and pointing at Lyv. I totally cracked up. What a funny little guy.

Finally I have confessions of a stay at home mom - I'm not always nice to my kids (I know you are all in shock at this unbelievable fact). One particularly trying day this week I looked at them and thought why am I not glad that I'm at home with them right now? The answer hit me like a brick - I need to take the "I" out of my day. I wake up and go through the day trying to check off my list of to do's, feel fulfilled for me, but what about my kids? Do I think how are they going to be "fulfilled" today, or what things am I going to make sure to do with them today? Too often I think that I'm entitled to a break, or relaxation since I do this all day - WRONG! I chose to to do this, and I need to remember that I only have them with me for a short period of time, and I need to make the most of it for me and them, and for me that means putting them first. So Sam, Jack, Lyv - I'm sorry that I've been impatient, unkind, and pretty much no fun - I'm going to try harder.

Summers' Schenanigans

To start off I want to record two stories for Shawn and his residency. #1)We have a new reason to have to buy new tennis shoes - your old ones got soaked with blood (Hep C blood to be exact) doing an ankle fracture repair, in Shawn's words, "there was just so much blood!" Totally gross, and a reason I never thought I would be shopping for new shoes for. #2) There is a little old lady who LOVES, LOVES, LOVES Shawn, because he is very careful taking care of an open wound she has. She just rants and raves over how wonderful of a doctor he is going to be, and told him a few days ago that he was not only a great doctor, but he was going to be famous (not sure how podiatry is going to lead him to fame, but who knows?) Then, and this is the greatest part, as she walked out, she came up behind him and gave him a smooch on the cheek. Back off little old lady, he's taken!! Seriously isn't that so cute.

Jack has had another eventful week - he never fails to crack us up or "crack" himself more specifically his head up too. He got a black eye, a little roadrash on his forhead and a bug bite. I didn't get a very good shot of the black eye, but it looks like stage make-up right now. It really makes his eyes pop! He also enjoyed his first candy apple at the Adam's Market Fall Festival on Saturday and was a big fan. He finally got a much needed haircut, and I love this picture of him in one of Sam's old outfits, he looks so dapper! He has such a funny personality because he does things that are funny on purpose, trying to get a laugh out of us, and he usually succeeds. He came up to me the other night with these googles on and stuck his little head around the corner and yelled Ma!!! We love this goof-ball!! Lyv has had a rough week. She is teething and finally broke her first tooth - bottom right! She is such a happy girl, so for her to be so fussy has been new, and her sleeping (and therefore my sleeping) has really taken a beating. She has started eating "food" - she tried carrots and sweet potatoes, and is not a huge fan of either. She's waiting for me to introduce the cake and icecream. Doesn't she look so big in her high chair? She has also started to roll and scoot all over. I love laying her down in the middle of the room and then finding her underneath the crib. And we finally got her into the red wagon, although she nearly topples over, she was able to go up the drive and back. She was more interested in trying to get the flowers Jack had loaded up in the cup holders that in anything around her, which also made her lean a little too much.
Sam's happenings are mostly preschool related because we've done two projects that he thought were "awesome" or in his words "That's what I'm talkin' about!" We did a volcano ( which scored me some major super cool mom points)and in honor of Columbus Day sailed our own versions of the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria. Unfortunately, the sails were a little top heavy and they all sunk. We'll be leaving the sailing to real experts. One sweet story that happened with Sam and his dad. The boys were playing outside and Sam decided to get him and Shawn a drink. They sat down in their lawn chairs, sipping their ice waters, and Sam turned to SHawn and said, "Isn't this great day? We're sitting in our chairs, looking at our baseball field, drinking our waters....." I love this about Sam, but it also reminds me how big he is getting.

Summers' Schenanigans

Conference Weekend always brings about two things: #1) great, inspirational and much needed guidance and direction from prophets of God. #2) Cinnamon Rolls - these are tradition in the Hill household and have carried over to ours, it just makes the messages that much sweeter.

Jack sported a new look this week - I think it will catch on. DOn't you love those nice legs? Is it me or has he just all of sudden "grown up" in the last month, he's officially not a toddler anymore - he's a BOY!
My life has come full circle - Sam created a "mom trap". He loves to make traps for bad guys who might be lurking around, but he decided to put his mastermind to greater use, getting mom. I say that my life has come full circle because my little brother J.D. and I use to do this to my mom too. Sam even drew up plans for the trap. Here are the plans: Here is the victim: Here is the trap: Here is SUCCESS!

Sam had some friends over on Saturday and they decided to put our little hill in the backyard to good use, using the wagon, kiddie-car, and tricycle as sleds. I have to admit it looks pretty fun!
We also took advantage of a more leisure-like weekend and drove to New Paltz (about 20 min. south of us) to the Mohonk Preserve and checked out the rock cliffs and changing fall colors. We are just under "peak" for fall foliage, and it is already amazing. We got out and watched some rock climbers scaling the rocks. We also attempted a Family Picture, using the timer on the camera and our ladder as a tripod. Here's the best we could do, not too shabby. I had to post this picture of the boys, ladies eat your hearts out!
