Summers' Schenanigans

We made a trip to the Hudson Pedestrian bridge this past week and enjoy a super cool walk across the Hudson River. This bridge was full of people walking, biking, pushing strollers, etc. and had a lot of neat signs talking about the bridge's construction and local wildlife. All the kids had a great time and I have to say that once you see a river like the Hudson river - you'll never look at what I use to consider "rivers" the same. It is HUGE!The pedestrian walkway was built using the original bridges trusses - it is amazing how they created those over 100 years ago, without all our modern technology.I loved this picture of Sam and the flag - aren't we so blessed to live in America?Jack recieved this aquadoodle from our dear friends the Freeman's!! He loved it, and it is great because isn't messy - thanks so much. He is such the artist, and really enjoys coloring, and does it in some form everyday.
My kids have the best grandparents EVER! who are always sending them lots of love and lots of thoughtful treats, packages, giftcards, etc. Here is some of the sweetness that we've recieved: Jack carted these treats from Grandma Julianne around all morning until I let him break into them after lunch. Here is another super cute addition to her wardrobe - the tutu leggings! Thank you Grandma Julie!! They are so cute on her chubby fat bum and thighs, I'm going to use it as part of her Halloween costume, so I justified the getting them!

Lyv has made met some noteworthy milestones - She is sitting. Yes this is long in coming, but since our flooring is nearly all wood floor, I've hesitated to put her down on the floor like I did with the boys, she is always in a bouncer, swing or exersaucer. She sat like a pro though. She has also decided that eating cereal is not so bad recently so hopefully she'll be able to sleep a little better through the night. I honestly think she just likes to know that we are still there, not that she is hungry, but she would be with me at all times, all day. Napping is still hit and miss with her, the poor thing! This is mainly my fault since we go and do things a lot of times interrupting her naps. Today she struggled getting to sleep and finally I resorted to putting her in the swing and she was soooooo wiped out. I went upstairs and found her like this five minutes later. Finally a note about Sam - he impresses me so much each day. He loves, loves, loves to learn - and preschool is really a fun thing with him. He makes it easy to teach because he likes learning about everything. I can't believe how old he is, and how much he knows, and I'm grateful to have one more year with him. I'm sure I'll miss him a thousand times more than he'll miss me. He was able to go camping with Shawn and the scouts last Friday and had a great time. He loved being able to spend time with just Shawn, which he doesn't get to do very often anymore. It was a great boys night!

Fall Kids Crafts

Since we are doing preschool at home this year, we've been "crafting" a lot more. Here are some fun fall craft ideas that we've done for the month of September as part of preschool. I'm going to start posting some of these ideas monthly if they turn out good, or if the kids like them.

Fingerprint Indian Corn: Using red, yellow, orange and brown paint, make fingerprint "kernels" on a corn outline. Glue on green husks. Leaf Rubbings: Gather leaves of differnt size and shapes, lay flat underneath construction paper and use an unwrapped crayon to rub the leaf pattern on the paper. Sam loved this project.

Fabulous Fall - 5 Senses Project: Observe things you see, smell, hear, taste, and touch that tell us it is Fall. For our smell we smelled different spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, etc. and made some Applesauce Cookies to taste!

Paperbag Scarecrow:
Cut out different shapes for eyes, nose, mouth, hat, hair, tie, etc. I used foam sheets and made "stickers" that the kids could stick on. Fill with crumpled up paper or newspaper.

Summers Schenanigans

All I can say about the past few weeks and days is that they came and went - and I'm glad they are gone. You know those days that you wish would end because you can't possibly clean up one more mess, or deal with one more crying child, or attempt to be patient since your last ounce of patience just flew out the window.... well that has been a little version of our week. BUT before I throw too much of a pity party for myself, I do have to give a huge Shout Out to my kiddos who day in and day out put up with me, regardless of my current mood, good - bad - and yes often UGLY! We've been enjoying a lot of beautiful "Fall" weather, cool mornings and nights, mild days, and have been watching the change in the trees, I can't wait when the fall colors are in all their glory, it will be amazing here in the land of leafy green. Check out how tall the trees are - now I know it is in comparison with Jack, not the tallest subject, but you get the idea. Here are some phrases to define our week:

Nesting: The boys decided to use all the dead leaves, grass and branches to create a nest for the birds. Sam is sure that a mommy bird will take this over as her own very soon, and keeps it stocked with delicious berries. To celebrate the completion of their hard work the boys engaged in a first of many "dangerous" High-Fives! Also a huge high five to Jack and Sam who worked on the nest for an hour TOGETHER! It is happening.... they just might actually become friends. Please note in the picture Sam's sweet cleats. His tennis shoes were falling apart and it was up to him to choose between cleats or new tennis shoes - you can see what won out! He thinks they are the bomb, and keeps asking me over and over again, why do they call them cleats mom? Does any know the answer to that question?
BIG BOY UNDIES: No he isn't potty trained, or even close for that matter. But Jack LOVES underwear and puts them on any chance he can. Over his diaper. Here's usually how he comes out after I've gotten him ready for bed. No bottoms, just Sam's boxer briefs, backwards. Oh well, I guess its one step at a time.
A Cage, I mean bed....: The boys think this is the new and improved way to watch a movie, inside the coffee table that we use to store blankets. Not a bad a idea, its soft and has a view right in front of the T.V. So why do I have a sick feeling that it would be really easy to just close the top and trap themselves inside of it. Or that Jack will find a way to bonk his head on something and we'll have round three of Head Wound Harry? I guess only time will tell.
Baby Got Back!: Exclamation point is needed because YES, Lyv has the biggest bootie and thighs of any child I've ever encountered. I don't know if it female weight distribution or if this is a sign of future physical features, but she has some major junk in her trunk, and I can hardly fit a #3 diaper on her. Exhibit AExhibit B
She barely squeezes into pants and we might have to settle with dresses, that allow more room. She also had her 5 month birthday, and she is such a great baby. She loves blowing spit bubbles, eating her hands, grabbing everything with arms reach, rolling, screaming for fun - literally high pitch AHHHH! just to let us know she is there. She loves attention is very happy and content if someone is looking at her, but when she feels like she's not getting enough love she can get pretty ticked, pretty fast. I've been waiting, not too patiently, to put Lyv in this cute beany and it finally fits... isn't she such a babe?
Droid: Shawn got a new phone (against all my pleading and begging) and I have to say that he has exceeded my expectations. He is not one of those people who made me hate it to begin with - you know that sits in the room and all they do is play with their phone! BUT, because he has been on call this week it has become attached to his ear! I guess I was very niave about what would be considered an "emergency" for a podiatrist - and I've become very familiar with infection, ulcers, post surgery issues, and the like! Shawn has been saving the world one foot at a time.

Stitches - AGAIN!

Poor, Sweet, Head Wound Harry has struck again. At lunch today Jack was throwing a little bit of a tantrum about finishing his food and got a little ahead of himself, tripped and fell, and of course (because it is Jack) whacked his head on the corner of the little stools at the kids table. It was like super slow mo as I watched the whole thing happen, and I thought "oh, no - this is going to be bad!) It wasn't as bad as the stitches he recieved in March due to an incident in the shower, but they had to close the wound with stitches none the less because of the location. He was a trooper, and only cried when they had to give him a local anesthesia (the worse pain ever!). Afterwards he kept telling the nurses and doctor "thank you"! Its a good thing that this happens to him, because he is tough as nails, and such a good sport about waiting in urgent care clinic.

At the end of the day watching the Incredibles, enjoying a sucker and a drink of chocolate milk made everything all better! What do you think, should we invest in a helmet?

Summers' Schenanigans

Sam had his 1st soccer game on Saturday. He is on the Purple Dragons, and he had a great time. He's still not quite sure how to run and kick the ball at the same time, but I'm confident that by the end of the season he'll be much improved. He has a really great coach, and other boys on the team who will help show him the ropes. We're going to start calling him Ocho-Cinco since he is wearing #8, and is 5 years old! Jack thinks Sam is the bee's knee's and ran up to him after the game and gave him a big hug. What a great brother.
We also have been taking FULL advantage of the U-Pick farms that we are surrounded by. I guess that is one great advantage of living in the sticks of New York, farms and orchards galore! We picked raspberries on Friday, and have eaten nearly half of our 4 pints worth (Chad Hill Family I know how jealous you all are now - you'll have to come and visit!) Saturday we picked about 10 lbs. of honey crisp apples at Dubois Farm in Highland, NY. They are like candy, it is crazy how good they are and we are highwaying through those as well. Jack is the main culprit of all of this indulgence, he will eat 3 apples a day, core, seeds and all. He also loves the berries and cries for more. Its no wonder he is as "regular" as he is. We had a great time, enjoyed beautiful weather, and AWESOME Apple Cider donuts! Wow, these babies were amazing. Sam was the best fruit picker you could ask for, mostly because he doesn't like to eat the fruit. Jack would just walk up the rows eating the berries or the apples and not really helping. Sam has a future in agriculture.

Shawn knows how to put the scare in scarecrow!

Lyv enjoyed the nicer weather (nicer meaning cooler and not humid) and loved being ohhed and ahhed at everywhere we went.

This is what we brought home and you should see the size of some of the apples -
this one was nearly the size of Jack's head and that is huge (haha - I know that was not a very "motherly" joke but come on you know you laughed!)

Photo Session

I'm no photographer, but we invested in a good camera so that we could take pictures of our own kids - and we had some fun the other day with them. I wanted new pictures of the boys since they are a year older, and of Lyv. She was not in the mood to smile much, so there will be a second round for her. I LOVE, LOVE, Love this outfit, and have been waiting for the day to break it out! Here are some of my favorites. Also all those Photographers - for real photographers.... Do you have any tips for me like lighting suggestions, or software that you use for you pictures to make the colors pop, or any other ideas - please share.
